Our Story
More than a playgroup.
A family of families, connected by understanding.
For every child, every parent, every story.
How it began…
Challenge Group began from a very personal place. When I had my daughter, Maia, I felt incredibly isolated. I no longer fitted in anywhere — mainstream playgroups felt too painful, and I couldn’t find a space where Maia could simply be herself without being looked at differently. I longed for somewhere we could both feel safe and connected: a playgroup that felt ‘normal’ yet allowed me to be authentic, even if that meant crying some days. I wanted a place where we would feel truly listened to, not judged, where my child could be celebrated for who she is — not just told what she wasn’t doing yet.
I couldn’t find that space locally — so, with some encouragement (including what I can only describe as a calling through a dream!), I decided to create it.
That was nearly 16 years ago, and since then, Challenge has become a family for so many. Long-term friendships have formed, and even when people move on, they often return in the holidays — because once you’re part of Challenge, you’re always part of it. During COVID, we started a WhatsApp group that’s grown to 90 members — a place to share highs and lows, questions and suggestions, knowing that every child is unique and there’s no one-size-fits-all.
What makes Challenge so special is the way it values everyone who walks through the door. Whatever your heritage, sexuality, faith, or background, you are welcome here. We celebrate children for who they are and adapt where we can to meet their needs. Homemade cake and weekly flowers from a local florist add a touch of care, and parents can even enjoy a free massage. We aim to nurture not just children, but parents and siblings too — because we know how much that matters.
If you’re thinking of coming along, we’d describe it as a place where you won’t feel judged, where you can relax (even if just a little), and where someone will always come alongside you — even if your child prefers to stay in another room. It’s a place to have a ‘normal’ playgroup experience, feel supported, and most importantly, know that you are not alone.
I’m a child and adolescent psychotherapist by profession, working with asylum seekers and refugees. I’m also a mum of four, with my husband George and our dog Billie! I’m a Christian, but deeply respect and value people of all faiths and of none.
I set out to help others through Challenge — and along the way, I’ve found it has helped me most of all.

Because no family should feel alone.

On my first visit, one of the lovely volunteers took my baby to cuddle and adore, while I suddenly had my hands free to eat cake! It was the one group I went to where my baby was loved uncomplicatedly!

Challenge Group creates a non-judgmental environment where parents and children feel accepted, valued, and connected. The support is ongoing and long term and does not end after a weekly session like so many other groups.

Challenge group is like a family without the blood and a warm hug near as well as far. They offer a warm understanding, both welcoming and supportive of your journey no matter where you are on it or what you are struggling with being it large or small.
